Pilot Project for the Assessment of International Medical Graduates

In 2002 the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, established a Pilot Project for assessment of International Medical Graduates (IMG) to practice as family physicians in Saskatchewan. Two IMGs were assessed in the first year and they are now fully registered and practicing in Saskatchewan.

This program is currently on hold. See the CPSS web site for current updates.

Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)
In Saskatchewan, International Medical Graduates can enter training programs through the first iteration of the CaRMS match.

See CaRMS web site for application procedure.

Temporary License
Excerpted and adapted from CPSS site, Paragraph 7.
IMGs who do not meet all of the criteria for full licensure, but who meet certain minimum defined standards to enter into a form of restricted practice, may be eligible for a Temporary License. Physicians working on a temporary license must have a named physician who is responsible to assist them in becoming aware of Saskatchewan practice issues. They will also be required to practice in a particular Saskatchewan community for a defined period.

Excerpted and adapted from Health Canada, International Medical Graduates National Symposium, Proceedings: “Licensing and Credentialing - The Perspective of the Federation of Medical Licensing Authorities of Canada” May 1, 2002
The temporary register is available for only one year. For family physicians who have 24 months of postgraduate training in a recognized educational institution, including the core rotations, there is a required mentor, but no on-site supervision. If the applicant has only 12 months of rotating internship, still with the core, they must go into directly supervised practice. The 12-month period allowed under a supervised, or an unsupervised, temporary licence is intended to allow them to decide whether they wish to commit to a region for a longer period of time.

The temporary register is open to physicians who have graduated from a medical school listed in the WHO directory, and who have postgraduate training from a jurisdiction with a similar medical education system, which is approved for registration by the provincial medical regulatory authority in that country. This is at the discretion of Council and not in legislation. The physician must, in addition, have either full registration with the licensing authority in the country in which the training took place or a pass standing on the Evaluating Exam.

See Temporary License in this site.
