IMG-Specific Program
There are no specific programs for international medical graduates in New Brunswick.
Most international graduates are initially licensed with a
Public Service license for direct employment in a hospital setting with a Regional Health
Authority. There are no specific prerequisites for such licensure. Each
application is dealt with on an individual basis. Most such licenses have been granted to
specialists, although a small number of family physicians have been accepted. The process
of assessment for suitability for licensure varies with the physician's background. In
some cases, external assessment tools, such as CSAT, are used. In other cases, an
interview process or probationary period of observation may be arranged. Physicians who
wish to pursue this should forward their CV to the College.
A process to upgrade to full licensure has been developed
for physicians after they have practiced in New Brunswick for one year.
Other Programs
Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)
New Brunswick does not have its own medical school so it is not directly affiliated with
the CaRMS match. New Brunswick is however connected to universities outside the province.

Training Programs, Prepared by the Canadian Post-MD Education Registry, Ottawa, 2002
Residency-training programs are funded through Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia,
Université de Sherbooke in Quebec and Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador. To be eligible
to apply all candidates must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and they must
have passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam (MCCEE).
For additional information on CaRMS see the CaRMS
web site.
Public Service License
This is the route most commonly used for international medical graduates. Interested
applicants should contact the College directly to determine if there is any possibility of
licensure. As an alternative, they may contact the Regional Health Authorities to
assess employment opportunities. If there is an interest in recruiting
individuals, the Regional Health Authority will contact the College to discuss their
possible eligibility for licensure. In any case, all such licenses must be formally
approved by the Minister of Health.
