Physician
Recruitment and Health Care Employment
Clinical Assistant Position
Source: University of Manitoba, 2004
Note: This position does not lead to licensure.
Clinical Assistants provide medical services under the
direction and supervision of a licensed physician. For Registration as a Clinical
Assistant with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM), a candidate must
pass the Registered Clinical Assistant (RCA) exams. A Clinical Assistant exam is generally
offered twice a year through the Continuing Education Department of the Faculty of
Medicine, University of Manitoba. Jobs are limited, so the university accepts only a small
number of candidates to write the exam at each sitting. The exam is not recognized outside the
province of Manitoba. After writing the Clinical Assistant exam, the candidate applies for
a position with the Regional Health Authority as a Clinical Assistant when a vacancy
arises. After one year of work experience he/she then writes a second exam.
Dates: The long form RCA Part I assessment is held once or twice a year (based on
available employment opportunities).
Applications: There is a limit of 10 candidates a session. Applications are generally
processed on a first-come, first-served basis, however, priority is given to those with a
written letter of offer that is conditional to passing the RCA Part I. Contact the Winnipeg
Regional Health Authority (WRHA)
regarding potential positions. You may still sit the Part I without an offer of
employment. In that case, once you are notified that you have passed, contact the Winnipeg
Regional Health Authority at (204) 926-8037.
Fees: The fee for the RCA Part I is $1,500. A deposit of $500 must accompany the
application form. (as per 2004).
Results: Results will be available three weeks after the assessment. The College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Manitoba receives a list of successful candidates.
