The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) represents the country’s 17 faculties of medicine and is the national voice for academic medicine. Our organization was founded in 1943 and functions to support individually and collectively Canada’s medical faculties through promotion of medical education, research, and clinical care.

AFMC strategic goals are:

  • To be a leading advocate and an expert voice on issues relating to health education, health research and clinical care.
  • To respond to changing societal needs with innovative educational programs.
  • To provide leadership in the development of a health human resource plan.
  • To define and advocate for appropriate funding to achieve the education and research missions of the Faculties of Medicine.
  • To enable and sustain academic careers for health and biomedical researchers through capacity building, education and funding.
  • To provide leadership in enhancing our accreditation programs and in developing a world class Canadian Conference on Medical Education.

The Canadian Post-M.D. Education Registry (CAPER) is the active data-gathering and research arm of AFMC with an interest in the post-M.D. clinical education of physicians in Canada.

The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is a not-for-profit organization that works in close cooperation with the medical education community, medical schools, and students to provide an electronic application service and a computer match for entry into postgraduate medical training throughout Canada

CaRMS provides an orderly and transparent method for applicants to choose a postgraduate medical training program, and for program directors to select applicants to enroll in their postgraduate medical training programs.

Centre for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad

The Centre for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad (CEHPEA) is a not-for-profit organization created to expand and enhance services provided in Ontario to internationally educated health professionals. CEHPEA is part of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s strategy to expand and enhance services provided to internationally educated health professionals.

CEHPEA will provide standardized evaluation and orientation services to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) for direct entry training in Family Medicine or many other specialties. Written and clinical assessments for candidates applying for PGY2 or Practice Ready Assessment (PRA) training will also be offered by CEHPEA, as well as the Pre-Residency Program for Family Medicine for candidates who have successfully matched to a Family Medicine residency training program in Ontario.

College of Family Physicians of Canada

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is a national voluntary organization of family physicians. It strives to improve the health of Canadians by promoting high standards of medical education and care in family practice, by contributing to public understanding of healthful living, by supporting ready access to family physician services, and by encouraging research and disseminating knowledge about family medicine. It conducts certifying examinations in family medicine. The CFPC is not a licensing or disciplinary body; its mission is educational and dedicated to setting standards for training and certification in the discipline of family medicine.

Information for International Medical Graduates may be found on the CFPC website; click on the “Education” tab, and scroll down to “Int Medical Graduates”. For further information about eligibility to sit the CFPC certifying examination please contact Sharon Etler, Candidate Credentials Coordinator.

The mission of the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) is to promote quality medicine so as to protect the public and help improve the health of Quebecers. To accomplish its mission, the Collège des médecins du Québec:

  • verifies the competence of future physicians and their fitness to practise medicine;
  • ensures and promotes the maintenance of competence of physicians;
  • evaluates and controls the professional practice of physicians; receives and deals with complaints from the public;
  • controls the illegal practice of medicine;
  • takes a position in debates of public concern in matters of health.

The Collège des médecins du Québec administers certification exams in Family Medicine and other Specialties. These examinations are accepted in Québec, New Brunswick, and in certain circumstances, in other provinces/territories.

The Access Centre is a place where internationally trained and educated health professionals can learn how to qualify for professional practice in Ontario’s regulated health professions.

The Access Centre for Internationally Educated Health Professionals provides the following services:

  • Ongoing counseling and support to assist clients in finding the most effective path to professional practice or career options that complement skills and experience;
  • Contact information and referrals to the regulatory body in the appropriate field of expertise;
  • Links to education and assessment programs;
  • Information and referrals for retraining;
  • Information about:
    - Standards of professional qualifications,
    - Licensing and registration processes.

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) is committed to ensuring the best possible medical care in Canada by promoting a uniform standard of qualification to practice medicine for all physicians in Canada. The qualification, known as the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC), is acceptable to provincial medical regulatory authorities and ensures portability across the country.

The MCC develops, validates, and implements tools and strategies to evaluate physicians’ competence (i.e., administers the Evaluating Examination and the other examinations for the LMCC qualification). Physicians who satisfactorily complete the requirements are granted the LMCC, and their names are recorded in the Canadian Medical Register.

Physician Credentials Registry of Canada

The Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC), a division of the Medical Council of Canada, was established to provide a centralized, uniform process to obtain primary source verification of a physician’s diploma and other core medical credentials. PCRC will provide an accepted national standard for source verification.

The information obtained by PCRC is permanently stored in a centralized repository, and provides a confidential, lifetime professional portfolio. With the applicant’s approval, the information can be shared with organizations such as provincial and territorial medical regulatory authorities and certifying and qualifying bodies in Canada.
