LICENSURE

Where can I obtain information about becoming licensed to practise in Canada?
Unlike many other countries, the registration of doctors does not occur at the national level. The license to practise medicine in Canada is granted by each provincial and territorial medical regulatory authority, under respective Medical Acts and upon meeting specific regulated conditions. Visit:

Will I need to write an examination to become licensed to practise in Canada?
All Canadian provinces and territories require that you write various exams as part of the registration or licensure process. Further assessment or training programs may also be required depending on the assessment of your credentials and postgraduate training.

LANGUAGE

What languages do I need to know in order to become a registered physician?
You require proficiency in English or French to become registered or licensed in Canada. Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset.

What examinations are administered in both English and French?

What are the main languages used in the provincial assessment/training processes?
Candidates must have a working knowledge of French in Québec. New Brunswick candidates must be proficient in either French or English. In the other provinces and territories of Canada, proficiency in English is typically required to undergo the assessment/training process.

What is the language of medical practice in Canada?
Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset. In Quebec, a working knowledge of French is necessary. A working knowledge of English or French is required in all other provinces, however English is the predominant language spoken in most other provinces.
